The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

March 21, 2012

"Sugar" is the name of a deaf white cat. She was in the news because on March 21, 2012, she fell 19 stories from a Boston high rise. Sugar fell onto a city sidewalk and walked away. Although she was very fortunate and most kitties could NOT emulate her luck, there were some factors which were in her favor. Sugar landed, in a desert of concrete and asphalt, on the only soft spot around, a pile of mulch. MSNBC, from which we got the details of this story, ran a picture of this pile with the crater Sugar made when she landed.

MSNBC describes the next miracle for Sugar:

...bouncing up from her fall of 150-200 feet,  Sugar ran near the building, rather than out onto the nearby highway. “Instead of, you know, being scared and just running out into traffic, she somehow hit the best spot and stayed near the building,” he added. “So it was very fortuitous on many different levels.”

Sugar does not have two blue eyes, which would guarantee deafness, but one blue and one gold. It is possible that because of her deafness, she did not react with terror to the nearby traffic, since she could not hear it.

And another miracle. The building super took her in. This may be the greatest miracle of all, though people who have not worked with stray animals may not get the point. The building concierge took her inside, and he called animal rescue.

And another miracle. The cat was microchipped. They determined from the microchip who her owner was:  a nurse away at work at the time.
