of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

March 22, 1951
Margaret Sweeny, nee Whigham (December 1, 1912 to July 25, 1993) became the Duchess of Argyll, when on March 22, 1951, she became the third wife of the 11th Duke of Argyll. In the next decade her scandalous behavior, while nothing next to her husbands. would create a sad social legend. Few recall though, how this society beauty had a close call in 1943, in a bizarre accident. She fell down a elevator shaft, while on a trip to the chiropodist on Bond St. Had the building caretaker not heard something unusual, it could have been deadly.
She was rescued, she relates, in her memoirs, Forget not: the autobiography of Margaret, Duchess ofArgyll, (1975), when "The caretaker, hearing strange noises, thought it was the cat" but soon realized his mistake.
