The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

March 20 1991

John Thaw, (January 3, 1942 to February 21, 2002) was an English actor. He is famous in America for playing the detective in Inspector Morse, which is an imported series shown on PBS stations. Thaw plays a morose aesthete who solves crime in the arena of the venerable Oxford University. A scenario which is catnip for many Americans and apparently Brits too. Thaw's character, based on novels by Colin Dexter, adds a little muscle to the long tradition of detectives who rely on their aesthetic sensibilities to solve crimes. In Thaw this tradition is continued by showing his taste for cultural events. And, purebred cats.

March 20 1991 is the original air date for an Inspector Morse, episode in which the mansion of a murder suspect turns out to contain,  among other mysteries, a strange creaking sound. A sound which turns out to be a Siamese cat sitting on a pool table. There is a long shot of Morse just staring at the cat with a slight smile on his face.
