The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

January 23, 1930

"She's rare vase, out of a cat's reach, on its shelf."

These are the words of Derek Walcott (January 23, 1930 to March 17, 2017) What he wasn't talking about was literary honors. None of those, none I can name, were out of his reach.

What he was talking about was the virtue of Penelope, the wife of Odysseus. She figures in
The Odyssey: A Stage Version. This play of
Walcott's  was commissioned by Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company, and is described in one blurb as composed of "inspired counterpointing of Homeric and Caribbean themes."
