The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

May 17, 1814

May 17, is celebrated annually in Norway because on that date in 1814 their national constitution was signed. By that time anyway, spring will have finally arrived and people are ready for parades and feasting. The Norwegian Forest Cat is a lot like the Maine Coon Cat. Here is a brief introduction to these cats, said to be very attentive to people.

This breed was recently (2013) in the news, when one named Leon chased a fox away from the cat's home in Troms (Northern Norway). The fox was looking for something interesting in the trash bins when the cat spotted it and charged.

Leon the lion: The cat dashed after the fox with the fearlessness of a much larger feline and quickly sent it packing

Fortunately for us, Owner Evy Hind, 48, caught the moment Leon turned guard cat outside her house, .... I ended up having a super morning with a cup of coffee and my camera.  [Said Hind. The article goes on]. ...It is thought its ancestors served as mouse catchers on Viking ships and that the modern Norwegian Forest Cat's ancestors are the 'mountain-dwelling fairy cat' referred to in Norse legends.
