The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

January 21, 1885

Duncan Grant (January 21, 1885 to May 8,  1978) was a member of the Bloomsbury group. That circle of modernist artists and writers is memorable for including writers like Virginia Woolf,   the daughter of Leslie Stephen, an editor of the Dictionary of National Biography. Noble lineage then, and their friends, lovers, and spouses all have a claim on our attention for the quality of their work. Duncan Grant was a Scottish painter, and a lover of Vanessa-- Virginia's sister. At times Grant, Vanessa, Clive Bell (her husband,) and Clive Bell's mistress, and also, David Garnett, Duncan's lover, lived all together, and were happy.

Duncan Grant,  is the painter of "The Cat", a color lithograph, dated to 1948.  Of course by then, Bloomsbury was over, but nobody knew it, yet.
