The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

January 1, 2013

January 1,

May Sarton's dates are May 3, 1912 to July 16, 1995. We feature some part of a poem of hers today, January 1, 2012, since the poem is titled: "New Year Resolve."  Sarton was born in Belgium, but her family fled to England when World War I started. Her father was an historian and her mother an artist. One imagines these genes as good for poetry. Sarton's poetry and her memoirs are both famous today.
.....

Time for a change,
Let silence in like a cat
Who has sat at my door

Neither wild nor strange
Hoping for food from my store
And shivering on the mat.

Let silence in.
She will rarely speak or mew,
She will sleep on my bed
And all I have ever been
Either false or true
Will live again in my head.

For it is now or not
As old age silts the stream,
To shove away the clutter,

......

She did not say, New Year, old resolutions. She lived her last decades in a cabin in the New England woods.
