December 31, 1871

Today we feature an illustration by Thomas Nast. It was published on December 31, 1871; that is after Christmas, although, it is one of the earliest images of Santa Claus as we imagine him today. There is a cat in this picture.

Nast also invented the iconic donkey and elephant images for American political parties. And the Tammany tiger. Thomas Nast (September 27, 1840 to  December 7, 1902) was born in Germany.
