Hilaire Belloc died on July 16, 1953. This critic wrote "A Conversation With A Cat," some decades before his death and the text indicates Belloc was aware of living in a world in which theological consolation was not readily to hand. This line for instance:

"At the end of a great civilization the air gets empty, the light goes out of the sky, the gods depart and men in their loneliness put out a groping hand...trying to understand whatever lives and suffers as they do."
