Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859. One of Doyle's creations, Professor Moriarty, would later form the model for Eliot's, Macavity: the Mystery Cat. In Eliot's words:

And they say that all the cats whose wicked deeds are widely known...are nothing more than agents for the cat who all the time, Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime.
