The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

August 4, 1909

Franco Gentilini (August 4, 1909 to April 5, 1981) was an Italian artist. Here we have a post war (post the second war) painting he did, titled "Nude with Cat" (1964).

Gentilini is a lot more popular in his home country. I could not really find out what he did during World War II, but I ran across this interesting  summary of art between the wars:

As the Weimar Republic collapsed and Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the new classicism—Parisian myths, Italian role-playing, and the German search for objectivity—was monstrously transformed into a quasi-scientific doctrine of human perfection under the Nazis.

There are lots of examples of Gentilini's art at this site: lots of nudes, lots of art history refs, and lots of fun.  And cats:
