She was born Caitlin Macnamara (December 8, 1913 to August 1, 1994) and throughout her life considered herself an artist. Her adult years included alcoholism and sexual adventurism. Augustus John was one of her lovers. Her first husband called her "Cat' and she signed some of her writing, with the first name "Catnag." Her fate was that of many beautiful women.

According to her Oxford Dictionary of National Biography article, she had a "second life in Italy as an eccentric Englishwoman, which lasted, with occasional trips to Britain, for thirty-seven years." She continued to write, stopped drinking, and did not give up her rancor. Her first life, of course, was characterized by  marriage to Dylan Thomas.
