The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

Maurice Utrillo (December 26, 1883 to November 5, 1955), has been described as a half-mad alcoholic. Here are some pictures from his life.

Here is the young painter with his mother, Suzanne Valadon, a painter herself, and his mother's last husband whom she met through her son. They were all three prolific painters.

This much later photo, below,  shows Utrillo with his wife, who had been a banker's widow, and we can see they both loved dogs.  That of course is a Utrillo in the background.

His mother was a renowned painter, and often painted cats. Her son became even more famous as a painter, and how could he not care for cats.

Another example of Utrillo's art titled, "Renoir's Garden" (1909-10)

There's a story here. I just don't know what it is.
More information is available, but the translation is not great.
