June 29, 1886

James Van Der Zee (June 29, 1886 to May 15, 1983) was an American photographer who earned a living working from his own studio in New York City. His documentation of the Harlem Renaissance is the most extensive photo evidence of that cultural era that we have. He lived a long and rich life. Our example of his work is his photo of Jean-Michel Basquiat, another artist, but one whose life was way too short. We can see the brilliance of both men in Van Der Zee's photo below.
