The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

June 25, 1925

It is June Lockhart's  birthday--June 25, 1925. She was Timmy's mom on "Lassie." The television show that made her famous of course was merely part of a series of Lassie retellings from the original "Lassie Come Home" book that Eric Knight published in 1940. The original book has this affecting scene when Lassie disappears from a poor couple's home. The husband is comforting his weeping wife. She says, as she is trying to comfort her husband too, by suggesting a replacement pet that won't cost so much to feed:

"If ye'd get me a cat, just a nice cat."
"Ay! One that'll stay curled up on the hearth, and stay by ye. That's it
I'll get ye a fine cat."

Lassie had gone, of course, since they were not her home. That lay further south. In the book. The television series has little of the beauty of the original story.
