The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

May 29, 1901

Henry Raeburn Dobson, (May 29, 1901 to May 22, 1985) was a Scottish artist who was born in Edinburgh and died there. Raeburn Dobson, as he was known, was a popular painter of society portraits. He is said to have cared little for money, and did not achieve the status his brother Cowan Dobson did, possibly for this reason. His marital status is also a bit murky and his sister Louie Morpeth, (mother of Sir Douglas Morpeth) is said to have been very close to him, and especially so in his last years. The painting below is attributed to Raeburn Dobson. I quote this site where there are numerous examples of his art.

Grandmother's care By Henry Raeburn Dobson

(The cat is in the lower left corner). I have to say the above painting looks at lot like the work of Raeburn Dobson's father, Henry John Dobson (1858-1928). But of course that might not be surprising for a family of artists.
