The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

Anderson, South Carolina is a southern town. It is right off Interstate 85, about 2 hours north of Atlanta Georgia. The south has lots of gulleys and kudzu and when someone heard a dog barking for three days, barks that seemed to come from such a milieu, they called animal control. What the officer found there made the national news.

There was a  schnauzer nursing, a kitten, in that southern ravine. The officer surmised that the dog could have gotten out but could not carry the kitten out by itself. Apparently it is not physiologically impossible for a dog with a false pregnancy to produce milk. The animal control staff confirmed that the kitten was getting real milk from the dog. Who knows how they wound up together in that spot. Schnauzer and kitten were taken to Anderson County PAWS, a local pet rescue.

The kitten and schnauzer were adopted together in early July, 2013. Though a few people claimed the dog was theirs, no one  could provide vet bills or other proof of ownership. I am with the Anderson PAWS on finding this pair a new home in such circumstances. This wondrous pair was first found on May 14, 2013 and now it is good to know they have a fine home, together; they have names, Goldie and Kate, and they have their own facebook page, with wonderful pictures.
