The Stevenses live at 1164 Morning Glory Lane. Darrin and Samantha dwell in a typical suburb with small yards and snoopy neighbors: Abner and Gladys Kravitz. Gladys is vain and silly. Her husband is bored and tired. There is however an odd and fascinating unease in the neighborhood and Gladys is the only one who feels it.
Darrin is the lead copywriter at a local advertising agency. His bright and pretty wife can't drive, can't cook, and loves staying home while he works. Their bookshelf is small. Darren's eyes are often puzzled looking, and may reveal a dawning suspicion that his wife has again, disobeyed him. Darrin is Bewitched, as in the 60s sitcom. Their cat is never on screen unless it is a plot device. What else is not onscreen?
Samantha Stevens, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, (April 15, 1933 to May 18, 1995) is happy to be the unseen power in her marriage because, she has magical talents. She is a witch. Read sexual potency here.
It would soon not be enough, not enough for the western world. From a cultural perspective, Samantha's witchcraft is the last stop before feminism debuts. It may be that discussing sexual power under the rubric of old-fashioned witchcraft was necessary to diminish its blinding power. That of course is a crabby summary.
Better is bottomline, main takeway and the whole point: things are not what they seem. And sex is no longer enough.
