The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

March 24, 1929

I like this a lot.

The artist is Christo Coetzee (March 24, 1929 to November 12, 2000). Coetzee was South African, and his work is typically "assemblage and Neo-Baroque." This art piece is described as being "24"H x 32" W o/c on masonite." It is titled "Spiral Axis" and dated to 1949.

Coetzee took photographs too. The University of Praetoria has some of his archives, including a photo album where we found this next photo. The album is titled this way: "Photographs from an album with 136 photographs, mostly taken by Christo Coetzee, titled in his hand." In particular the photo here is Christo's cat in their London home. Taken in 1958 the photo reveals a grace and balance that informs.

The label, in Christo's hand, reads: 33 My Cat London.
