The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

Judith Kerr was born June 14, 1923. Her family fled Nazi Germany. She married a British screenwriter Tom Kneale ( (1922 -2006) on May 8, 1954. Kerr's journey from Berlin to London, is a very 20th century odyssey, which she would later directly address in her  autobiographical book for children, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (1971). Kneale was twice nominated for a "British Film Award for Best Screenplay", while Kerr received an OBE (2012) for her contributions to children's literature: she is the author of the 17 books spoken of as the Mog series, which was very popular. A picture of Kerr is below and some excerpts from a 2011 interview with this writer, (by Cassandra Jardine.)

Judith Kerr's stories of forgetful Mog and an intruding tiger have been captivating children for more than 40 years. Her new tale is a fantasy dedicated to her late husband.

Kerr...[has] a rather strange cat. Katinka could easily be mistaken for a white cushion as she lies curled up on a chair in the sun ... [S]he's no relation to Mog,' Kerr says, looking fondly at the ninth cat with which she has shared her life....

[Her  new book, is for adults, not just children]...My Henry [2011] is as charming as her other works. Once again, it features fat, bewildered cats and a tiger who drinks from the teapot.... it's about an old lady who goes off on fantasy adventures with her dead husband. They hunt lions, ride dinosaurs and chat with the Sphinx...

Judith Kerr is a writer as interesting as the sphinx.
