The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

May 27, 2014

May 27, 2014 is the date of the memorial service for children's author and editor, Charlotte Zolotow, nee Shapiro, (June 26, 1915 to November 19, 2013). She was, according to an obit notice, "author of more than 90 titles for children, [and] began working at then-Harper & Brothers in 1938. She rose to associate publisher in the children's book division, then ran an eponymous imprint, and retired in 1991."

Some of her titles --

Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present (1963)
Snippets: A Gathering of Poems, Pictures, and Possibilities (1993)
My Grandson Lew
(1974)

--and this is just a random sampling.

The last five years of Zolotow's life, her cat-loving family, included Tumbleweed, a black and white moggie.

Here is a picture of them --

Tumbleweed is now cared for by other family members.
