May 22, 1927

Peter Matthiessen (May 22, 1927 to April 5, 2914) cannot be summed up in handy terms. This CIA operative and novelist, thinker and adventurer, writer and explorer, naturalist and historian, will be the subject of biographies in the near future. Such books may well miss an important note: that the author of Wildlife in America (1959) and The Snow Leopard (1978) was an advertisement for a certain kind of American affluence.
