The Master and Margarita is the masterpiece of author Mikhail Bulgakov (May 15, 1891 to March 10, 1940).  It could not be published in the Soviet Union; apparently the author's works were all eventually banned. His wife had it published in 1966, 25 years after his death.

Here are some covers. The first is from 1967.

Here is a 1988 Russian edition, published just before the implosion of the Soviet Union:

This cover was by Gennady Novozhilov.

The book is described as satire and science fiction. The criticism in English seems fairly incoherent. The Master and Margarita may be one of the few books I cannot discuss without reading it first.
