Bohumil Hrabal (March 28, 1914, to February 3, 1997) was a Czechoslovakian writer, best known in the west for the film version (1971) of his book, Closely Observed Trains )1965). An English translation appeared in 1995. He remained creative and fresh during the communist era, a feat which no one not there should even try to evaluate.
