of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

February 22, 1882

Eric Gill (February 22, 1882 to November 17, 1940) was an English sculptor. His was the kind of dominant personality which attracted disiciples. Gill was one of the great artists, and it is perhaps only his sexual experimentation which prevents his fame from spreading farther. He was a deeply religious man who insisted on pushing boundaries. He never hurt anyone. Although the idea of spiritual discipline did not sink into his awareness. Whatever that means. His sculpture is in a number of cathedrals, including Westminster.

Our selection for a cat reference is his manger scene, an engraving which dates to 1916. Among the animals attending the birth is a cat. The title is "Animals All" and the original is at the Tate now.
