The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

January 14, 1841

Berthe Morisot,  (January 14, 1841 to March 2, 1895) was a French impressionist painter. Her brother-in-law was Edouard Manet. Morisot's subjects were daily life scenes reflecting her bourgeois origins. Our link is to her painting La Fillette au Chat, which was finished around 1889. La fillette was  her own daughter. Morisot returned to the subject of girls  with cats several times.  Her accomplished paintings can draw one in, and so to switch to a great artist,
such as seen in the many portraits OF  Morisot by Edouard Manet, and Renoir, is jolting.
