Brooke Astor (March 30, 1902 – August 13, 2007) was a major figure in New York upper class society (middle class would be a better description in other western countries.) She inherited a large fortune from her third husband, an Astor, (who died in 1959) and spent the last half of her life enjoying philanthropy and other advantages of money. She dressed up opulently to visit some of the poor who benefited from her largesse. She said they wanted to see her glittering, and she was right.

Her philanthropic destinations include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and the Animal Medical Center. These organizations are just a few of her donatees, which also include the Charley Rose show.

September 2012 will see Sotheby's auction some of Brooke Astor's personal effects, including some jewelry. One item is a brooch in the form of a lion reclining on a branch. Crusted with gold, diamonds and rubies, this feline in pose resembles a neutered house cat more than a lion.
