The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

June 25, 1925

It is June Lockart's (Timmy's mom on "Lassie")birthday--June 25, 1925. The television show that made her famous of course was merely part of a series of Lassie retellings from the original "Lassie Come Home" book that Eric Knight wrote in the mid forties. The original book has this affecting scene when Lassie disappears from a poor couple's home, (the husband is comforting his weeping wife):

[She says, as she is trying to comfort her husband too by suggesting a replacement pet that won't cost so much to feed]
"If ye'd get me a cat, just a nice cat."
"Ay! One that'll stay curled up on the hearth, and stay by ye. That's it
I'll get ye a fine cat."
