May 26, 1976

Martin Heidegger, the German philosopher, who worked throughout the Nazi years at the University of Freiburg, died on May 26, 1976. We find the following in a translation of his book: The Metaphysical Foundations of Logic.

"Existence is the term for the sort of being we ourselves each are, human Dasein. A cat does not exist, but it lives. A stone neither lives nor exists but is present before us."

I guess you had to have been there.
