The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac
of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

May 24, 1928
Roger Caras was born on May 24, 1928. Caras is a major figure on the animal rights front yet never comes across as preachy or self-righteous. He spent years as president of the ASPCA, and also as a judge at Westminster. He relates a funny story from the 1982 Westminster Dog Show. You gotta understand these judges are exhausted and when two cats got loose inside the show area, and the upset dog handlers complained their dogs were distracted, one judge said something to this effect: "those cats'll be removed when one of them wins a competition."
