April 24, 1824

April 24, 1814, is the birthdate of the richest woman in England during the Victorian era. One of her many charities involved educating poor children and the following is an excerpt from her recommendations for the Whitelands Training Institute (Chelsea England) regarding teaching children to be kind to animals:

"The cat and kitten should only be played with in a gentle manner; scraps may be given to the faithful dog. In its walks out the child may be allowed to gather food for the canary, or any pet bird. Thus the child will be led to think of the wants of others...habits of frugality may be fostered by not allowing meat from the table to be given to the dog, but only the scraps and bones."
