Oliver Godsmith was an acclaimed playwright (She Stoops to Conquer) but he began life as an improverished medical student. Even as a poor medical student, his love for cats was such that he had been able to keep, in his words, "a skeleton, [and] a cat". He died on April 4, 1774.
