Feb. 23, 1633

Samuel Pepys, the English diarist, was born on February 23, 1633. Not only were his diaries not meant for publication, they were written in a code so they could not even be stolen. A typical entry is like this:

"About three o clock this morning I waked with the noise of the rain, having never in my life heard a more violent shower; and then the cat was locked in the chamber, and kept a great mewing, and leapt upon the bed, which made me I could not sleep for a great while."

This was written of August 22, 1662.
