Notice that Rex Harrison is ready with the cat-litter. Pyewacket, the cat, found at an animal hospital for the play, also had an understudy named, Sarah, and the director was ready to use a stuffed cat should that be necessary. Which it nearly was. According to IMDB:
The cat that starred as the magical cat "Pie" hated her, so she had to be very careful with it unless she wanted bad scratches on her hands and arms.
This may account for the fact, according to one review:
...Pyewacket was actually on the stage all of three minutes, and in Lilli Palmer's arms at that....She (Lilli) acted as if she was scared to death of him and he was struggling to get away."
