The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

September 26, 1872

Max Ehrmann was born in Terre Haute,  Indiana His dates are September 26, 1872 to  September 9, 1945. This American writer, a Harvard graduate, worked as an attorney and in his parent's meat-packing business. You will recognise his words, though you have not his name; he wrote:

Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

This is from  "Desiderata" (1927).  Ehrmann is the author of perhaps the most posterized of American sentences. His wife collected his poems, and his journal entries after his death. She published both, and a biography of him.

The journal of Max Ehrmann was published in 1952, and includes this line:
"It is the way of nature from cat to lion."

With perhaps little warrant I associate that with a line from his poems,  a line which is totally forgotten: "Be watchful of the rich that evil are."
