The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. May 19, 2017

There is a picture of Julian Assange's cat here. The photo is dated May 19, 2017. The date is a wee anchor in a furor recently subsided: the whereabouts of the feline who shared the Ecuadorian quarters where Assange was arrested.

This is the cat 'Assange got.... in 2016, purportedly to keep him company as he spent his days inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The cat gained quite a bit of a following on social media under the moniker, Embassy Cat, described as the master of “counter-purveillance.” In an interview with The New Yorker, Assange had said he called the cat Michi or Cat/stro.'

[Now, according to the New York Times,] 'The Ecuadorean Embassy in London did not return an email seeking information on what happened to the cat....“It is not here,” the newspaper quoted a representative as saying. “We are not a pet store, so we do not keep pets here.”'

And back to our first link:

'WikiLeaks put an end to the mystery. Julian Assange’s cat is safe and sound. “We can confirm that Assange’s cat is safe... Assange asked his lawyers to rescue him from embassy threats in mid-October. They will be reunited in freedom.”'
