It is "Hug a Medievalist Day." Yes that is a thing. This picture is a good reason, and there are more pictures here.
Cats were treated with a certain amount of suspicion as if they had a connection to the infernal. When they were so mercilessly persecuted their revenge was the plague when the rats took over.
