The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

DK has replaced the former name, Dorling Kindersley, for a publishing house justly renowned for the quality of their books, specifically a certain splashiness in the illustrative dimension. And now they have The Cat Encyclopedia: The Definitive Visual Guide, (2014). I haven't seen it yet, but we found this quote, there, and it is handy since today is the birthday of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (February 25, 1841 to December 3, 1919).

The Cat Encyclopedia
says:

'One of the most celebrated artists of the French Impressionist movement, Pierre-Auguste Renoir ..., successfully painted cats many times. Despite most of his subjects looking distinctly drowsy—like the tabby in Sleeping Cat-- Renoir's cats still manage the unmistakeable self-possession that comes naturally to all felines.'

Our first impression of this Cat Encyclopedia leaves room for hope.
