of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. April 12, 1916

The very famous children's author, Beverly Cleary (April 12, 1916) has published memoirs, and My Own Two Feet (1995) gives glimpses of a charming life. I was interested to learn that in 1941, at least, people knew how to use Borax, a laundry additive, to eliminate pests. She put a saucer of it on the top of a cabinet to get rid of roaches.

At their first home, we learn that her husband "debased the cat with cheap tricks." The cat was named "Kitty," and came with the house-- the previous owner, was going to take it to a shelter, should the new owners not keep it

Since reaching an age of 100, Cleary has lived in a retirement home.
