Francis Wheen (January 22, 1957) , the British writer, wrote for many of the major newspapers in England. His bibliography shows an interest in the adventuresome and/or fringeworthy:

(1990),
Who Was Dr Charlotte Bach?,
(2002),
How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions
(2004),
Strange Days Indeed: the golden age of paranoia, (2009).

His books on Marx are considered solid: Karl Marx: A Life (1999) won the Isaac Deutscher Prize. He followed this up with a volume focusing on Das Kapital (2006). The former focuses on the character of the man.

and this, he edited: The Chatto Book of Cats (1993).
