The canvases of Morris Hirshfield, are called primitive art but that cannot be accurate. Here is his "Cats in the Snow." These are not clumsily rendered animals, this is a vision of joy.

Hirshfield (1872-1946) was a wealthy business man. He and his brother had a successful clothing company in Brooklyn. The patent he received, November 16, 1921, was for an ornamental part of a slipper. Then in 1937 he retired, due to poor health it is said. But then he just produced this wonderful art for the next decade.

Morris Hirshfield arrived in New York from Poland when he was 18 years old.
