The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

October 8, 2004

You can tell who copies wikipedia when you see wikipedia mistakes repeated. Such is the case for Jacques Derrida, whose dates they get wrong. He was born July 15, 1930 and died October 8, 2004. One of the most significant philosophers of the 20th century Derrida constructed "deconstruction." That is to say, Derrida studied his world and history while keeping in mind the unknown and unknowable margins. Naturally this scandalized those in their studies who are unable to distinguish the florescent light from the wallpaper.

Among Derrida's cats was a Siamese. The cat is said to have been named "Logos." I hope this is not true, I hope it is perhaps, a name his wife bestowed.  Because such a name trivializes a concern for reality. Still, until I can track it down, I will assume the story is -- one spread by some Anglo philosopher.
