The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

September 19, 1867

This lovely picture is of Arthur Rackham, (September 19, 1867 to September 6, 1939) the English illustrator.

Arthur Rackham had a very successful career as an illustrator of children's books. According to his biographer James Hamilton: (Arthur Rackham: a life with illustration, 1990), the artist had an unusual power of concentration.

He was never disturbed by the people and conversation around him, and when he wanted to break off from work, he would run a comb through the hair of his cat.

We hate to break off this post, but we have a cat to comb.
