We quote below the first paragraph of a poem about a cat, written by the American short story writer, Philip F. Deaver. Deaver is another midwest writer, born in Chicago on August 14, 1946. He is currently writer in residence at Rollins College, in Winter Park Florida.
The poem is titled "Gray." It starts---
This was our pretty gray kitten,
hence her name; who was born
in our garage and stayed nearby
her whole life. There were allergies;
so she was, as they say,
an outside cat.
