The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

May 15, 1905

Albert Dubout, (May 15, 1905 to June 27, 1976) was a French cartoonist, whose drawings are also  seen in book illustrations, including those in  many French classics,  and advertising. In 1953 he received his country's Legion of Honor.  We read, at metafilter.com:

Another well-loved topic for Dubout ...[was] cats. The Internet, needless to say, is full of Dubout's cats, some of them quite beautiful. In addition to cats and overweight bourgeoises, Dubout covered a considerable number of topics, including bullfighting(in both funny and serious modes), sports (... Tour de France, hunting) , crowds (medieval France, Paris, multicultural Marseilles, bureaucracy, mass tourism, wedding... and orgies....

And trains. I wonder if trains are not something we need the relief of  joking about right now, with accidents in Philadelphia, and Atlanta this May (2015).  I found these train cartoons quite charming.

And of course, les chats. Like this
Dubout cartoon:

And here is the artist Albert Dubout himself---
