of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. April 19, 1877

Gertrude Vanderbilt (January 9, 1875 to April 19, 1942) grew up in the rarified atmosphere of Gilded Age American money. She married more becoming a Whitney. Our photo shows her to be a beautiful and gentle spirit. She herself was a talented sculptor and this took determination. American art was the focus of her own collecting, and she founded the Whitney Museum of American Art, which opened in November 1931 in Greenwich Village. The museum moved several times after her death. Her birthday has not moved, but it is cited differently in different sources. I used the Almanac of Famous People to date it to April 19, 1877 (edited by Frank Castronova, 1998.)
