The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

Sophie Kinsella (December 12, 1969) is said to write chick lit. This genre I place above "romance novels." Yet pausing over some excerpts of Kinsella's prose makes me wonder about the best category for her work.

From Wedding Night (2013) we find these feline tropes:

"Lottie is suddenly bristling like a cat" and "I creep toward the guest house, staying silent as a cat."

It will stay a question.

But one thing is certain, aspects of her real life sound like a romance novel. You may recall a recent auction of jewelry belonging to Agatha Christie. A trunk containing a strongbox was sold at a 2006 auction for 100 pounds. When forced open the strongbox turned out to contain jewelry that Christie had assumed "lost." At the auction we mentioned first, the amount realized was 50,000 pounds. One bidder was Kinsella's husband, and he succeeded in purchasing jewelry for his wife, Sophie Kinsella.
