The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

November 1, 1964

You'v seen variants of this art before. Walter Keane (1915 to 2000) said he got the idea for this theme from seeing children in war ruined Europe. (not the cat, the big eyes.)  His wife  Margaret Keane (born 1927) left her husband on November 1, 1964. They were divorced in March of 1965. In 1970 Margaret announced that she was the real artist of the thousands of paintings of the kids. Her ex-husband said "no, and she only said she was, when she thought I had died." She sued him for slander and a judge settled matters by having each paint something in the courtroom. Walter said he had a sore shoulder and could not paint at that moment. Margaret tossed off an obviously authentic Keane child before the judge. She was awarded damages but never received any money from her exe. Tim Burton is working on a movie about their story.
