The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

August 6, 1889

On February 11, 1920, Katherine Mansfield wrote to her husband, from Menton, (on the French Riviera) where she sought to recover her health.

Her husband was John Middleton Murry (August 6, 1889 to March 12, 1957). Murry was a prominent part of the English avant garde: he knew everybody, reviewed everybody, and published many of them in one of his many brief periodicals.

She ended her letter:

Tell Wing to keep both eyes on you...Are the snowdrops out.? The cuckoo has been heard at Hurstmonceux, Sussex....

Wing was one of their two cats, according to an annotation in Letters Between Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murray (Cherry Hankin, 1998).
