July 5, 1935

Oliver Herford died on July 5, 1935, just before the last century started to get interesting. He was an American illustrator and also a writer, a humorist. Herford, born on December 3 1863, should be better known today. Some of his bon mots include-

The Irish gave bagpipes to the Scots as a joke, but the Scots haven't gotten it yet.

A man is known by the silence he keeps. 


Here is illustration Oliver Herford did for his book The Rubaiyat of a Persian Kitten (1904). I started to call it satirical, but Herford's sweetness shines too brightly for satire to seem the right category. Here's a link to whole book.
